Vice-President election to be conducted on 5 Aug Last date for nomination is July 18

The elections will be held on August 5 for Vice Presidential post. National Election Commission Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi announced this effect in the press conference today Commission will issue notification for 4th of July. The last date for filing of nomination will be July 18 and the work of layoff will be done on July 19. Voting for the Vice Presidential election will be done on the day of voting, on August 5.

The term of the current Vice President Hamid Ansari ends on August 10, he is in the post twice.

Significantly, the elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha elect the vice-president. The Vice-President is also the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, at present, the total number of members of both houses is 790 but some seats are vacant.

The candidate has to deposit Rs. 15 thousand as a surety. The age of the candidate should be 35 years and he should not be in the post of any benefit of the central or state government.

It is important to note that there are rigours in the country regarding the presidential election. On behalf of the ruling party, former Bihar Governor Ramnath Kovind has been fielded, while the opposition has fielded former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar as its candidate. Both leaders have filed their nominations and are now campaigning all over the country. On July 7, the votes will be cast for the presidential post and on July 20, counting will be done.
