Prime Minister Narendra Modi to meet Xi Jinping floats the concept of SECURE. Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping of the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit which is being held in the city of Qingdao.

On Saturday, Prime Minister met Chinese President Xi Jinping and held bilateral talks. This is the first ever SCO summit after its expansion where Pakistan and India were also included as a full-time member just like the Astana summit which was held in Kazakhstan in 2017.

Today Prime Minister Modi during the meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping talked about the relationship with the neighbourhood. He further talked about India’s priority in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. He said that India provides a commitment towards full cooperation for a successful outcome of the entire summit.

Modi further described the concept of SECURE, i.e., ‘S’ for security for citizens, ‘E’ for economic development, ‘C’ for connectivity in the region, ‘U’ for unity, ‘R’ for respect of sovereignty and integrity and ‘E’ for environment protection.

While delivering the speech at a restricted session of the SCO Summit, Modi mainly focussed on the connectivity with the neighbouring countries. He said, “We have again reached a stage where physical and digital connectivity is changing the definition of geography. Therefore, connectivity with our neighbourhood and in the SCO region is our priority.”

He further said to improve the tourism facilities for foreign tourists. Currently, only 6% of foreign tourists are from SCO countries. And he is going to double it very soon and that too very easily. He said, “Increasing awareness of our shared cultures can help boost this number. We will organise an SCO food festival and a Buddhist festival in India.”

It has been seen for the first time that Indian Prime Minister is attending SCO summit along with Pakistani counterpart who became full-fledged members of the group, which are jointly dominated by Russia and China.

Currently, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation has eight member countries and these countries cover around 42 percent of the total world population along with 20 percent of the global Gross Dometic Product (GDP).

Other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, there are various other leaders included Russian President Vladimir Putin. Pakistan President Mamnoon Hussain and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation was founded at a summit in Shanghai in the year 2001 by the presidents of China, Russia, Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan.
